The Ministry of Primary and Mass Education’s Advisor Professor Dr. Bidhan Ranjan Roy Poddar said that the weekly primary schools holiday will be two days, and other holidays to be reduced. He made this statement at a press conference organized at the Secretariat on Sunday (September 7) to mark International Literacy Day.
The advisor said, “I think that literacy is the main task of the Ministry of Primary and Mass Education. If literacy is to be done at the school level, how many obstacles do we have to overcome? Why are we not able to move forward easily? I want to reveal these issues to you.”
He said, “If education is to take place in school, a necessary condition is contract hours, that is, how much time a teacher can give to a student.” The contract hours first depend on how many days the school is open. If you look at the calendar, my school is open only 180 days out of 365 days. Have you noticed this? How many days are we allowed to keep the school open for studies? This means we have a lot of unnecessary holidays left. “We are trying to reduce the holidays if possible. We are doing this in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, because it will not work if we do it in isolation.”
The advisor said, “The current goal is to reduce the number of holidays in the calendar. If we want to reduce the number of weekly holidays from two to one, it is difficult to do it separately in primary schools since all types of educational institutions are the same. There is a demand from the teachers that the teachers are in the vacation department, and if they want to be in the non-vacation department, it is a matter of financial implications for the government. There is such a thought, but we have not been able to decide on it. However, I will reduce my time a little in case of holidays that are in our calendar.”
When asked whether it was decided which days of leave would be reduced, he said, “I will let you know when it is finalized.”
