ISB Interview Preparation: A Practical Guide to Answering with Confidence

Getting an interview call from the Indian School of Business is an important milestone for any management aspirant. However, reaching the interview stage does not mean the admission journey is over. The interview gives the admissions team another opportunity to understand a candidate beyond test scores, grades, essays, and work experience.

For candidates preparing for the ISB MBA, interview preparation should therefore go beyond memorising common questions. The focus should be on understanding one’s own career journey, explaining future goals clearly, and showing how past experiences have shaped those goals.

With the right preparation, candidates can walk into the interview with way more confidence and articulate everything in a natural manner.

What Does the ISB Interview Assess?

ISB admits students through a holistic evaluation of their application. The school considers various parts of an application, such as academic performance, pertinent test scores, professional experience, extracurricular activities, essays, awards, achievements, and recommendations.

The interview is another integral component of this process. Shortlisted candidates for the PGP in Management are invited to an Interview (Virtual/Online or physical). The interview lasts around 30 minutes and is conducted by a panel that includes ISB faculty, alumni, and senior staff. During the interview process, candidates also write two essays on the spot.

This means the interview is not simply a test of communication skills. It is an opportunity for the panel to understand the person behind the application.

Understand the ISB Selection Criteria Before Preparing

One of the most common interview preparation errors is to practice for the interview without practicing the rest of the application. Rather, candidates need to have a comprehensive understanding of their profile and how it all comes together.

The ISB selection criteria involve a holistic review rather than relying on one number or one achievement. ISB considers the complete profile of an applicant while assessing suitability for the programme and contribution to its community.

Candidates should therefore be ready to discuss:

    • Academic background
    • Professional experience
    • Career achievements
    • Leadership experiences
    • Extracurricular activities
    • Career goals
    • Reasons for pursuing management education
    • Reasons for choosing ISB

A strong interview response should connect these areas rather than presenting them as unrelated facts.

Know the Application Form Inside Out

Almost every detail mentioned in the application can become a possible discussion point.

Before the interview, candidates should review:

    • Resume
    • Essays
    • Academic records
    • Work experience
    • Career achievements
    • Extracurricular activities
    • Awards and certifications
    • Career goals

For example, if an applicant has mentioned leading a project at work, the panel may ask about the problem, the candidate’s role, the outcome, and what was learned from the experience.

The safest approach is not to memorise prepared answers. Instead, candidates should remember the important facts and stories behind their application.

Prepare for the Most Important Questions

Some interview questions appear frequently because they help the panel understand a candidate’s motivation and self-awareness.

    Tell Us About Yourself

This question often sets the direction for the rest of the interview.

A strong answer should briefly cover:

    • Academic background
    • Professional journey
    • Important achievements
    • Career interests
    • Future direction

The answer should feel like a short career story rather than a repetition of the resume.

Why an MBA or Management Programme?

Candidates should explain why management education is needed at this stage of their career.

A strong answer should clearly connect your current experience, identified skill gaps, management education, and future career goals.

For example, a professional moving from a technical role into business strategy should explain what experience has created that interest and which skills need to be developed.

    Why ISB?

This question requires specific preparation. Candidates should research:

    • Programme structure
    • Faculty
    • Learning opportunities
    • Clubs and student activities
    • Alumni network
    • Industry exposure
    • Areas of academic interest

Generic statements such as “ISB is a top business school” do not explain why the programme is suitable for a particular candidate.

Be Ready for Questions About Work Experience

Professional experience is an important part of the PGP application. ISB states that candidates for the PGP are expected to have at least 24 months of full-time work experience before enrolment.

    Candidates should prepare stories around:

    • Leadership
    • Teamwork
    • Conflict resolution
    • Failure
    • Problem-solving
    • Decision-making
    • Taking initiative
    • Working under pressure

The best examples do not always have to be major achievements. A small workplace situation can make a strong answer if it clearly shows learning and personal growth.

    Understand ISB MBA Eligibility

Students looking for ISB MBA eligibility information have to first check the latest eligibility requirements for the respective MBA programme, as the eligibility may vary from programme to programme at ISB.

For the PGP in Management, applicants need a bachelor’s degree or equivalent qualification from a recognised institution. ISB accepts three-year undergraduate programmes commonly offered in India. The school also considers the candidate’s complete academic record rather than applying a minimum CGPA or percentage cutoff.

In addition to the above, for regular PGP admissions, applicants have to possess the necessary full-time work experience and a valid GMAT or GRE score, as mentioned by ISB.

It is advisable for candidates to check the latest requirements from the official ISB admissions web page before applying.

    Prepare for the On-the-Spot Essays

The interview process also includes on-the-spot essays. This part should not be ignored during preparation.

Candidates can practise writing short responses on topics involving:

    • Career goals
    • Leadership
    • Social issues
    • Personal experiences
    • Business situations
    • Ethical decisions

The goal is not to use complicated vocabulary. A clear structure is more useful.

    A simple approach is:

    Point → Explanation → Example → Conclusion

Regular timed writing practice can also help candidates organise thoughts quickly.

    How Mock Interviews Can Help?

Mock interviews can make preparation more practical. A good mock session not only tests common questions but also challenges candidates with follow-up questions.

After every mock interview, candidates should review:

    • Answer clarity
    • Speaking pace
    • Body language
    • Examples used
    • Weak responses
    • Areas where answers became unclear

This process helps identify issues that may not be obvious during self-practice.

    Conclusion

An ISB interview isn’t just a Q&A session. It provides candidates with an opportunity to share their experiences, strengths, career aspirations and motivations for pursuing management education. Understanding the ISB selection criteria, reviewing the application, preparing for essays, and practising realistic questions can make the process easier. It is important for candidates to also review the current MBA eligibility requirements prior to making an application for ISB MBA programmes.
